skin problem
eleni asked:

Hi can anyone help with my rabbits skin problem? It started off that he had whats like human dandruff . I treated it with a lotion for ticks and fleas but it only lasted 3 weeks and it came back.I repeated the treatment and it’s cleared again. Now he has a bald patch about 4 inches long and i saw him biting his side and think he is pulling his fur out by himself. He is about 8 months old,a dutch lop ear, happy and well cared for and lives in the house. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Thank you everyone, I took the rabbit to the vet and it is mites. He was prescribed zeno 450 2 pipplets were applied to the back of his neck and spine this is to be repeated twice more fortnightly. I would advise anyone with the similar problem to try and buy the pipplets over the counter if it’s possible as my vet earned £45.00 for a 2 minute cosultation!!! Thats a potential whopping £1350.00 an hour!!!

he could have some skin mites it’s best to take him to the vet so they can diagnose it properly Lisa

I’d recommend taking him to the vet and having him checked for mites. It would explain the itching which is probably causing him to pull his fur out. Rachelle B

There is a serious rabbit disease which may cause this problem. It is caused by mosquito bites. Check your rabbits breathing, because if he has this, the breathing will become heavy. Whether your rabbit has this disease or not, I would check it out with the vet, and while your there ask about the vaccination, I think the disease is called mexiatricialous or something like that. My rabbit id female and only pulls her fur out when she is on heat and ready to mate. But I dont think this is your issue. Good Luck. CatGirl9

It could be mites, which will require at least a couple of Ivermectin treatments. Or, it could be a major seasonal shed. Most of my bunnies do that once or twice a year, though I have one lop who sheds out nearly half her hair every four months or so. During a heavy shed, they can develop bald patches, and will often pull their loose fur out as they shed. So have your bunny checked for mites, then assist with the shed by brushing at least daily, or picking the loose fur out with your fingers. SLWrites
