cat with skin problems?
philtaxdri asked:
I have an 8 year old female cat who has developed skin problems in the last year. On her back, in the area about 4 inches from her tail to her tail, she had sores that scab and fall off then do it again. They never bleed or ooze. On her tummy, she has a scaly red area that grows from a tiny spot to a large area, then recedes again. The vet tried Neo-Predef and oral pred which have little effect. He sent us to an allegy specialist, who did a lot of tests, charged two arms and two legs, found no cause, but said it IS allergies and she should eat an expensive dry food for allegies in cats. She hates it, but she eats it, but it has been three months and NO IMPROVEMENT. If anything it is getting worse. I also washed the area with a shampoo she gave me for the condition, no help either. Has anyone seen this or know what to do? The areas itch her like crazy. Thanks for any help!

when pets have food allergies…you CANNOUT feed them anything else but that certain food. No treats, wet food..nothing. Just that specific food. I know it does cost a lot of money to go to a dermatologist for animals, but maybe a second opinion from another vet. Maybe you’re first one missed something janelly_chick
I have not seen a case as bad as your cat has but my cat went through some similar issues. I started by keeping an eye on the type of litter that had a bad effect on her skin. I also bought some different cat food, I believe I started using Purina one I also watched for fleas which I was told by my vet that my cat is highly allergic to. She will get those scabs around her neck and tail and they would also ooze. Check with you vet to see if she is having an allergic reaction to the type of litter you are using or if it might be fleas. justice 4 all
Have you investigated the possiblity of a yeast infection? The symptoms sound right and the persistance as well… there are dietary suppliments that may assist or a anti-yeast shampoo. Shelagh S
I am convinced that some animals are allergic to synthetics. Keep her off carpets and kitty beds made from anything except cotton. People can get terrible rashes from bleach and washing liquids too. Try making sure everything she touches is free of soap, bleach, etc. Rinse everything very thoroughly. If it is something like this, you’ll cure her in three days. Good luck. Poor kitty. truthteller
I had the same problem with my female cat a few years back, it came every summer and went away with a round of shots from her vet. The vet called it scabby cat disease, basically an allergy. We moved to a new home and have not had a recurrence - not saying you need to move but i may be something in the home that is causing it. Check the website below for more info about the disease, sounds just like what my little bubby had. The only problem she had from the shots was weight gain, she went from a streamlined runway model to a fuzzy looking football, plump and round in the middle - I’ll tell you what, I would rather have a chubby bubby than my scabby tabby anyday!! Talk to the vet or get a second opinion, best of luck - poor little scabber!! bridiedarlin
