Cocker Spaniel skin problems. How do I end this?

Kristie R asked:

I have a buff mini cocker spaniel. She has had miserable skin problems for over a year. I have taken her to several vets and had her put on pretisone (sp?) and antibiotics. I give her baths in vinegar water to control yeast. I have bought a ton of anti bacterial shampoos and the condition just keeps coming back. I give her omega 3 fish oil on her pro plan skin formula food. Is there anything else I can do?

Unfortunately, Cocker Spaniels are prone to skin and ear problems, and there really isn’t anything that is going to cure this problem, just manage it. She should get bathed weekly (or twice weekly depending on the severity) with prescription shampoos (and no, bathing her twice a week with shampoo that you purchased at the vet will not dry out her skin). Keep her ears clean with the vinegar water, and try to clean them every day. She probably doesn’t have food allergies, although you can do a food trial to a hypoallergenic food, but she probably does have environmental allergies, and it’s probably worse in the spring and fall because of all the pollen. Just keep on doing what you’re doing because this is something she will have for the rest of her life unfortunately. animalLover4326
