Dog’s cast causing skin problems?
pr3ciousgurlie972 asked:
I have a little Pomeranian that broke his leg around 4 1/2 weeks ago. It hasn’t fully healed yet and my vet told me he might take another 4-6 weeks to fully recover. At first I was concern because when I went to the ER the first night the vet there told me to get his cast change every week or two, while my regular vet told me that he will be fine with the same cast on until his leg is healed. Does anyone know who is right? Also, I am worried cause I started to notice him licking and chewing on his cast lately. So, today I took a look at the top part of his leg and his skin seemed to be dry and with red spots. Should he get his cast change to avoid any bacteria or any skin problems? They never prescribe me with any antibiotics to prevent any infections, because they told me he wouldn’t need it. Can someone please help me with my concerns.

your dog might have had an allergic reaction the cast caninegeek
when my dog broke his leg, he had to have his bandage and splint changed every two weeks. If I were you, I’d be in the vet office asking them to either remove the cast or give me antibiotics for the sores the cast is causing on his leg. Bonzie12
We have a little Dach/Chi who got a broken leg as an 8 wks. puppy and then got it wet from falling into the fish pond (my OH is an idiot, but that’s beside the point). So, since it was wet, we HAD to get it changed, but the vet, who was a very experienced older gentleman did not give us instructions to get it changed unless it did get wet. We had a dog when I was a child that broke his back leg, and the vet had us bring him back once to change it. So, as far as I know, once during the healing process to check for proper joining of the bone was about the norm. It probably depended on how severe the break was. Things change however, and I don’t know the current theory. You might consult with a third vet or do some more online research.
As for the itching, I have complete faith in a product that was developed by NASA. Obviously, you cannot shampoo the leg, but you could use some topical treatment, and there is something that works, guaranteed.
I used it on some hard skin cases and it worked when nothing else would. If you called them, you may be able to get overnight shipping or at least a place near you that carries it.
