Going to job interviews with skin problems?

Paul H asked:

I’ve suffered from several skin problems for a number of years now (it’s been hell at times) but I really feel I’m at the right place in my life to move on and start applying for jobs, but there’s a part of the old me which is still very anxious about going for interviews with my skin problems. I’m sure most of the anxiety is just in my head, and I’m sure that my personality will come across stronger than my skin ever could, so basically I guess I just need reinsurance.

– I’ve suffered from social anxiety for a number of years, and have had treatment for it, so again it could just be down to that as to why I’m asking this question in the first place.

My skin problems are manageable, but are still mostly visible most of the time.

It sounds like you’re very aware of who you are and can overcome this. Don’t let your outward appearance prevent you from accomplishing what you know you can do.

Going to an interview and applying for jobs can be scary for anyone — not just someone who is anxious about their appearance. Part of it might be due to this, and part due to your concern that they won’t see past the skin.

However! You should definitely go. I suffered from pretty bad acne when I went to several corporate job interviews, and I got the job because of my skills. If you exude confidence, despite your skin problems, you will definitely be a contender for landing the job. Caren

The only thing that really matters in interviews is how confident you are and how well you come across. Sounds like you aren’t very confident so I would really try and work on that. Its hard for some people but its just a state of mind. Once you manage to successfully pull off ‘acting’ like your confident, it will start to become a genuine feeling and not a ‘front’ because you will start to see people treat you differently. I had a mate in school who had very bad acne, the worst in the year but he was also the most confident kid in the year. He had absolutely no problems getting a wicked job as soon as he left school and now he’s 26 and on £35K a year. humz

Bosses aren’t looking at your skin problems, unless you’re applying for a modeling job. They’re looking for someone who’s confident, can follow instructions, and all that other good stuff.

How lame this might sound, but “It doesn’t matter what’s on the outside, it matters what’s on the inside.”

    Hope everything goes well!!! Tiara

I have terrible skin (I suffer from acne and have scars from it) and used to hide away. As I’ve got older (I’m 31 now) I have come to realise that good people (ie. the people that count!) see beyond the surface. I have spoken to friends about this and they are shocked that it used to be such a problem for me, as I am now happy and confident in my skin!
I also think it makes you a better and less judgmental person because I treat people how I would like to be treated.
Remember you may think your skin problems are really noticable but other people will see your great smile, the sparkle in your eyes and your enthusiasm for life.
So go out there, get a job and be proud of who you are.
    Good luck. bitchandproud

just remember you are only human, to feel confident not care what others think, just accept yourself because everyone have flaws. Make sure you are doing this for your own survival in society and not for a beauty show, like some people which think its important, it isn’t and they don’t know much….who would be intimidated by those shallow assholes…i probably wouldn’t. Don’t worry, just pray and the universe should eventually give you what you need in a mysterious way. sweetfrezz17
