How can I help my dog stop chewing on his skin and pulling out his hair?
Jane asked:
My dog of 12 years is my baby and I love him. I have taken him to the vet and had him checked for many different things. He has no fleas and the doctors say he just has skin problems.

I have tried oatmeal baths, lotions for dogs, even that expensive hot spot spray, to no avail nothing is working and he is a mess. He is going bald near his rear and the vet says it may be something he will have to live with.
Please help!

Call Ceasar Milan (the dog whisperer). Maybe he can help! Char
Is it possible he is allergic to his food? You could try switching his food and see if that helps. zumbasheri
That makes no sense your Vet just says he has a skin problem
Didn’t do test for the cause??? Right .. Try another Vet, because a Vet would test for allergies, and or mange.. krennao
you shave him and squirt him with lemon juice GossipGirl
Does he have any sores, scratches, rashes? He can have dry skin. Either way, your Vet should of sent you home with some antibiotics or some kind of medications/sprays- and medicated shampoo/ conditioner. Do not change his dog food unless you know for sure that its what’s causing the problem. Ask your Vet first. If it is the food, then your Vet can prescribe you a dog food that will help improve his skin along with some other meds. Take him back to the Vet or try a different one. The Vet did not answer your question and did not do anything about it. It is hard to believe he sent you home without any meds or further advice/information.
Good luck. Tena
My guess is that his anal glands are impacted and that can bother a dog. I would take him to either another vet or a groomer & ask about his glands. Many, Many groomers have seen a lot of skin conditions & although they might not know how to fix it, they can tell you what others have done. Becky
