My dachshund has a problem withe here skin getting really scaly, we talked to the vet, and wash here with a special shampoo, but it dosen’t help, she still bites till she makes scabs. She is ten years old, and has always had this problem. Any suggestions on making her more comfortable. She also bites her toe nails.

Take her to a new vet
what about having her tested for food Allergies??
vet time! try taking her to a different vet to get a different oppinion. the first vet u took her too could be wrong.
It is likely an allergy of some sort.
It could be due to food, but it’s more likely an environmental allergy…like people get.
Ask another vet (second opinion, don’t ya know) to evaluate the dog and ask for some histamine blockers.
Cats and dogs both have the same problems with pollens and dusts and whatever the hell else that people do.
First of all, remove wheat and corn from her diet. There are some really good Lamb and Rice dog foods out there. But be sure to check the ingredient list. Many Lamb and Rice formulas still have wheate and corn in them.
Then, go to a health food store and in the cooler section, get a product called EFA (essential fatty acids). For a dog so small, add about a teaspoon of that to her food every day. It will help her skin not be so itchy and dry.
As for the sores she chews, try Sulphadene on it. I use it on my dog when she gets hot spots. It heals the area quickly and tastes bad when she chews.
she could have allergies, mine do around this time of year. you can try giving her a hald of a benadryl to stop her itching and ease her discomfort a little.
however, if her coat is bad and her skin problems are ongoing, i would suggest a change in food. the food i would suggest would be iams dog food. i work at a kennel and people have left dogs for 2 months on a trip. then, when they get back, they cannot believe their dog’s coat and skin condition. i would really strongly recommend a food change.
another thing could be the bath itself. dogs should only be bathed once every 6 weeks at the most. if your dog’s skin is scaly and cracked, the shampoo can actually be worse for your pet.
in any case, i would still suggest a trip to another vet. if your current vet gives up, has no suggestions, or just tells you to live with it, then it’s time to get a new one anyway.
Hope this helps :o)
