skin problem
deviatedseptum1fan asked:

I just recently adopted an 11 year old beagle shes been spending alot of time outdoors and im scared she might have been bitten by a spider or something cause shes pulled a portion of her hair out on her rear and a small portion on her tail . She wont stop scratching at it either it’s to the point shes bleeding from it. This has happend in only three days or so i feel so bad for her what can i do to take care of the wound and get her to stop scratching? i was thinking of cleaning it by bathing her in warm water and maybe putting some Neosporin on it and wrapping it in goz? what could i wrap the wound in that wont stick to it after the blood dries? I dont know what to do please any advice would be greatly apriciated. she just wont stop itching it, it kills me to see her so uncomfortable.

Has the dog been wormed? You should really get her to a vet.Hope she gets well soon. cmh_1970

I would take her to the vet just to be sure, but she could just have allergies, if so benadryl can help her stop itching, but ask the vet how much to give her. Also, petco and other places like that should have a ‘hot spot’ medication to heal those bare places she keeps biting…good luck and I hope everthing ends up ok! Puglover00

Absolutely, positively take the poor beast to see a vet. After that, I would say the most important factor in a dog’s health is the quality of food you offer. Forget supermarket brands, they are junk food, go to a pet center and buy the biggest bag of Science Diet, or any other name brand food. Look for the right food too. Either ‘big dog’ or ’shiny coat’ or whatever describes your beagle best.

They are what they eat, don’t give the beagle table scraps, keep some dog buscuit on hand always. Spend lots of time with him/her also - they sometimes pull their own fur out for revenge for being left alone all day. Make sure doggie knows you love him/her and play and talk and mess around every day! Christopher A

This sounds like flea dermatitis, it could be a spider bite though. I’m going to recommend that you wash the dog with a shampoo that contains oatmeal derivatives - oatmeal is great for irritated skin. (Topically of course) Make sure that you rinse well and TOWEL DRY (no blow dryer right now)
The dog has probably really traumatized the skin by chewing it. the saliva that heals it also can cause the skin to crack and dry, and if she keeps doing it it can get raw and begin to weep lymph. That will start a new cycle of odor and sloughing of skin and eventually permanent hair loss. May I suggest that you get a food supplement called “IN” its a chewie like additive that can REALLY make a difference from the inside for a dog’s coat. DONT USE OIL IN THE DOG’S FOOD, she’s older and the coating action could have a bad effect.
Go to the skin care section in your pet store (try to find a good sized chain store for the best selection of products if possible) READ the bottles til you find a product that addresses what think is what best describes what you are seeing.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS - MORE IS NOT BETTER OR FASTER!!
DONT wrap the wound - it needs to be dry to heal. The neosporin is okay in small amounts if its open wounds. Make sure she’s dry when you put it on.. Dont use it if the wound is deep, it would heal too fast on top before the wound healed inside and would form an abcess.
Talk to your regular vet about getting an E-collar(Elizabethan collar - a big plastic funnel collar) to discourage her from chewing it but PLEASE address the itchiness before you do so. If you dont treat the itchy spot and put on the collar …well that would be like you having a bunch of mosquito bites and someone tying your hands behind your back so you couldnt relieve the itching - instant insanity right? Try to find a spray with cortisone or that says it treats itchiness and help her out.
Can you keep her inside once you get rid of the fleas?
She’s pretty old to be outside alot dont you think?
And congratulations to you for adopting an older dog. I wish more people would do so. The wolf runner

VET is best bet and probably she is allergic to some food you gave,
some dogs are allregic to milk and chicken so whatch her diet and try bathing her with Esentham anti itch soap which you can purchase from any guardian /watson pharmacy aunt_webby

Sorry to hear about your pets problem. We have had two dogs with skin problems and it is a costly problem. Most times its allergies and we have not the money to pay for a sleu of tests to find what she is allergic to. Our vet has been giving her prednisone shots from time to time to control the problem and it does help, we also give her a allergy med orally 2 times a day. The vet seems to think our dogs is an allergy to flea saliva. She doesn’t have fleas, but they bite her and it causes the itchiness that drives her and us crazy.

If your dog is bleeding, you may need to see vet anyway, get her immunized with an antibiotic and keep it as clean as possible, so it can heal. She may also need Prednisone to stop the itching. Good luck and hopefully her problem will soon be history and you’ll have some good remaining years with her. J H
