It could be fleas, food allergies, mange, etc.
Have the vet take a look at him, I am sure he is uncomfortable. Shanna

if not flees or ticks…very sensitive skin… my shih stu was like that! had to condition him with baby shampoo and conditioner, it worked! angie babe

It could be Low Thyroid, Mange, Fleas, Allergies (food or environmental) or skin infection. Your vet should do a skin scraping to determine exactly what is causing the hair loss.

If you have been bathing him - STOP! Too much bathing can cause skin irritation and dry skin.

ADD: NO! Don’t use flea powder. Go to your vet and get Advantix or Frontline. If it is fleas, you will have to treat your home, too, (carpeting, bedding, furniture, etc.) or they will just keep infesting your dog. Pom♥Mom Spay & Neuter!! Ni4Ni

there is a lot of reasons for this condition,,,
    a couple…
he has fleas and is allergic to them,,,you then need to get some flea aid from your vet.
could be his food…alot of dogs are allergic to all types of grain,,,,i would check his food for wheat, barley,,,or any other type of grain,,,not rice, rice seems to be good for dogs,,,
he may have heat spots,,,which can be caused from all sorts of problems,,,grass, sun, and allergies to things just like people,,,,
but the first thing i would check for is fleas….then his food,,,these are the two that you can fix quickly. Cindy Wieb

wash you dog in apple sided vinegar and then take all the dead fleas out of its fur also you can make a tea tree oil shampoo. if this doesnt help maybee change its food and take it to the vet. Jess

it sounds like your dog has an allergy, lets go through the list:
have you changed your cleaners in the house, carpert cleaner, freshning spray, laundry soap, etc?
    have you changed the food?
have you added any type of chemical to the yard to prevent weeds or make the grass grow?
have you changed its shampoos or added any spray on it?

you need to keep in mind that animals have pads on their feet that can soak up chemicals and they lick their paws which are two sure ways for harmful toxins to enter the blood stream and cause problems.

ive usually seen this problem associated with food and it is common for a dog to just start being allergic to a product in its food. Stay away from:
    Corn
    Rice
    Dairy
    Eggs
    Starch
    Beef
& Chicken in your pets food for these are top allergens

Try to have the food mostly meat because it reduces the chance of any additives to affect your pet.

I suggest foods with lamb, brown rice, whole grain, barley, venison, duck, bison (basically all gamey meats)
A great allergy brand that ive always suggested is ANNAMAET OPTION *purple bag* it is a bit expensive but definatly worth it! Also look into the buyers program, i think its either buy 10 or 12 and get the next free =)

Also make sure your pet is free of ticks and fleas and if you notice dandruff try bathing your pet with a shampoo rich in oatmeal

    hope this helps =)

*also i would not go with flea powder because it is really rough on the skin, instead i would suggest frontline or advantix. Its a monthly dose you can administer to your pet. Its a clear odorless gel that you apply to the skin from the neck to the shoulder blades. It works with the oils in your dogs body and spreads the flea and tick formula throughout the whole body with no harm to your dog. You can buy it at any local pet store. *please stay away from Hartz brand, too many problems with dogs dying*

    GOOD LUCK Jessica

I can’t really tell what it is,but there is a possibility that it might be fleas since he’s scratching himself. You can take it to the vet so they can give him a flea bath.Or if you don’t want to spend so much money, then you can go to somewhere like Petco or Pet Smart or any other places like that to try to find some sort of cream for him,or some bandages to cover it up so he can’t scratch it.If it still doesn’t work, then you have no choice then to gtake him to the vet.And that is all I can say.Okay? Nikki

my dog has really sensitive skin and it can get all flaky. We switched over to organic food (we use pure vita) and that helped a lot. Also, I always try to buy sensitive skin shampoo and her skin has gotten a lot better. kelsey p
