My german sheperd’s skin problems?
princessmargaret@rogers.com asked:
I have three pets, a lhasa-poo, german sheperd, and an outside cat. All of which have been to the vet, been treated for fleas, and there is no sign of fleas on any of them. The lhasa-poo is completely healthy, the cat is completely happy, and my german sheperd, has major skin rashes, chews all the fur off his legs, inflamed ears does anyone know why my german sheperd is having these problems while the rest of my animals are healthy?
He is a year old, he has been on hollistic food (no wheat or corn), acv in his water, raw garlic in with his kibble, and salmon oil capsules. It has been about two weeks. Is this long enough before results ?

That exact thing happened to my dog, it turned out to be food allergies. We had to switch her dog food to Pro Plan and we don’t have that problem anymore. But you should probably take him to the vet just to make sure.

Take the dog to your local vet. We are not vets, here. Bonnie L
I would bet it’s an allergy. Try reading the ingredient labels on the food you’re giving them. Avoid wheat and corn - see if that helps. If not try something else. Just keep going over the ingredient list until you find something. Another possibility is that the dogs skin is dry. Just like some people have very dry skin. Go to the vitamin section of the store and get a big jar of Fish Oil capsuls. Give the dog 1-2 capsuls with his food twice a day. That will help if it’s dry skin. Finally, it could be an environmental allergy, shampoo, something in the yard, your perfume, who knows. You’ll just have to go trial and error until you figure it out.
PS with the food, you’ll need to test him on different foods for about at least 1-2 weeks to see if there is really a difference. bamabelle1202
So if you took your dog to the vet, what did they say about this?
It could be from the food or your dog could have an allergy to something else. It could be from the environment.
Try some home cooked food for a few weeks, just for your german shepherd and see if it makes any difference. Don’t fancy it up to much though.
I have a dog that has Atopy (hey fever) and she gets the same condition as your dog but she was diagnosed and now is treated for the condition with natural products. However, she was diagnosed in her first year of life. You don’t mention how old your dog is.
I don’t know if dogs can just become allergic to something out of the blue which is why I think maybe it was a change in food or environment.
If the situation is really bad and your dog is breaking her own skin with the biting and scratching then you may have to make an emergency dash to the vets for a cortisone shot which will calm it down pretty much straight away. Note though, that this isn’t the best way to treat the condition, the drug is not a nice one and I think there can be side effects.
Use the vet as your first step so you know what’s actually going on here. Then you can decide what to do about it and be prepared to go through a process of ellimination. tarielle_au
