skin problems
mj asked:

I took her to the vet and he gave her a steroid shot and 5mg of prednisone daily. I had to change dog food to Iams from the vet clinic. It is kangroo meat and oats. Anyone have a problem with sensitive skin with their dog?

My mothers 2 dogs both have skin problems, not allergic etc but just really itchy flare ups now and again. They are both on prednisolone and will be for the rest of their lives. The food and meds should help.

My Cocker has skin problems so I give him a Benadryl every day and he does great. Check with your vet so you give the correct amount.

It could be the dry weather of winter if you are up north. If so, get a humidifier.

My Lab has allergies to dust and seasonal allergies, which causes her skin problems, she licks and nibbles at herself.
She has immunotherapy injections monthly and also antihistamine tablets and an antiseptic spray that helps to cleanse and soothe the hot spots.
lf it’s a food allergy then changing food should help, did the vet test her to find out what the allergy is to, there are many different things a dog can be allergic to.

Yes. Consistent use of pretension will eventually start working. I had to boid my dog chicken and rice and start from there to find out what he was alergic to. I happened to be the brand of dog food were were giving him. We started introducing new things to him each week thereafter. Also for my dogs skin I have the groomer treat it with vitamin e. That seems to help too.

my dog has dandruff and that could the reason why ur dog is itching. Try going to a pet store and picking up some dandruff shampoo, or dry skin shampoo. You should be able to find it in any Pet Smart or Pet Co

I have a dog that is allergic to all forms of grain. I decided rather than try to find a dry food, I did a lot of research and developed a food that meets their nutritional needs. I do not think Iams is a quality food, but if your dogs allergy clears up then that is good. I don’t believe that filler grains are necessary.

You may want to do some research on giving your dog prednisone. Steroids elevate the chances of getting cancers in some breeds. I have an itchy Scottie. My vet gave him one steroid shot and will not give any more. We have to keep his skin problems under control by giving allergy pills as needed, running a humidifier when the air is dry and being diligent on his flea treatments. Oil supplements also can help. Your dog may need the prednisone to get over the initial itching, but you do want to taper this off for the health of the dog.

Are you certain that the problem is food-related? It often is food-related, so the dietary change may improve her health. Check into oatmeal-based shampoos and conditioners that can help with itchy dry skin. You can thin the conditioner with water and put it in a spray bottle and spritz the dog regularly, then work the solution down to the skin. There is a balance. You don’t want to jeopardize her health with steroids, but you also don’t want her to suffer from itchy skin and sores from hot spots. Good luck.
