skin problem
Molly T asked:

Hi, I have a 9 year old thoroughbred gelding. He has developed some scabby lumps on his shoulders that have now seemed to move down along his back. The lumps come off with the fur and leaves a weepy sore. He is rugged most of the time so I’m pretty sure its not rain scald. He is otherwise in really good health with a very shiny coat. Just wondering if this could be a fungal infection and what I could do about it. Thanks

You’ll need to get a vet out to determine what it is.

It sounds a bit similar to what my loan had last year - it turned out to be an allergy to storage mites, living in his bedding. He was back home with his owners when he got the problem, he’s not stabled with me, and they produced really horrible sores right on his side - they were horrid to look at and all he did was itch itch itch.
We only realised what it was when he came home, after being on anti biotics for ages that hadn’t worked - he suddenly came back to me, was out 24/7 and it cleared up within a week.

So it could be a form of mite/allergy causing it.
Or, the reason he was on anti biotics was because they at first thought it was a skin condition causing it - so it could be that aswell.
But the only way you’re going to find out is to get a vet out to give them a good look over. sazzy

Get a vet out to be safe - it might be something of nothing, but Im sure you dont want to take that risk

It could be a number of things, your vet may be able to help with the diagnosis, Take the rug off of the horse, that could be one of the causes of this strange skin condition. Make sure the horse is outside with out a rug, and gets fresh air and exercise for starters. Call the vet to get a professionals opinion. wahoo
