Question regarding skin problems with puppies. ?
Catherine C asked:
We’ve tried every kind of shampoo and even conditioner, but my 5 month old puppy still has flakes, itches a lot, and even has a rash next to his private area. The Doctor says its just allergies, so he said to give him a baby Benadryl. That still didn’t work and his skin is just as bad. What could it be? I don’t really trust what the vet has to say.

Go to another veterinarian and get a second opinion.

could be a food allergy or an allergy to the environment… or just that he is a puppy… some puppies have more skin issues but they grow out of them, my puppy when she was about 5 months old kept getting an infection in her girlie area becuase when she would pee she would touch the ground alittle and bacteria transfered that way.. the dog suggested cleaning it every time she went potty… she still itches(maybe food related) and we tried the benedryl but it just made her sleepy and didnt seem to help as much and i just hate giving meds to her cause it just treats the symptoms not the problem,
try switching the diet and make sure your flea meds are up to date cause if the puppy has an allergy to fleas, just one bite can cause lots of problems duckie07
First puppy typically have dry skin & it isn’t a problem. Over bathing him will make it worst. Using conditioner makes it worst & is probably the main cause of the breakout. Use only a good hypo shampoo that does not contain soap, detergent, dyes or perfume. You can try an oatmeal but it isn’t hypo & some dogs have a reaction to the oatmeal. Once a month is enough for baths.
I personally use a product line made by Kenic. Their shampoos are all soap/detergent free & except for medicated line are hypo also. They do carry the before shampoo I described named Clean free. I use their brand on almost every dog I groom without any problems. joanplus4dogs
