skin problems
Natalie asked:

I rescued a chocolate lab and when we got her from the rescue agent she had a small scab on her left ear(right at the end). It is a scab and will fall off and then be bright red again and start the whole process over again. It is now getting bigger and is on the right ear as well. What could cause this? We have tried a couple of antibiotics but nothing is clearing it up. She also has what appear to be bright red zits/pimples on her nose. If anyone has any answers/solutions to these skin problems I would really appreciate it.
We did take her to a vet and they said they have never seen anything like this before and gave her some medicine that does not seem to be helping.

Not sure about the ear, but with the pimples on the nose, are you giving her food and water in plastic bowls? Plastic bowls harbor bacteria which seeps into the plastic, and cannot be cleaned out. Switch her to stainless steel bowls and that problem will go away. Love my Lab

AAHH a “hot spot” on a Lab is a common problem. If you have
not tried cephalexin 500mg in combination with prednisone 20mg
ask your vet about this combination. I really think it might help. Bob G.

To take care of the skin problems go to the vet and ask him, he would have the best answer. PRI PAINKILLER

My best bitch “Lily” has the same problem. Hers stems from a food allergy. She also will open up the hotspot on her ear herself if she gets nervous.

I would try switching dog food .. or going to a raw diet and see if you can clear him up that way. Something without grains as filler would be the best choice if you wanted to stick with a kibble.

If his allergy does not come from his food try making environmental changes .. like leaving him outside more everyday or changing the laundry soap you wash his bed in.

Lastly you can get a commercial shampoo from your vet to bathe him in but i have found that brushing my girl often and bathing her once a month (NO MORE THAN THAT) in an oatmeal shampoo helps much more than the vets solution.

Good luck with your boy. Daisy
