Skin problems with my horse?
riley! asked:
My horse has scabs on his hocks, it looks like extremely dry skin. The one on his left leg however is starting to form into a cut. We’ve been using bag balm on it and it doesn’t seem to be working, he is susceptible to skin problems and has had fungus on his tail and mane before, but that is now cleared up. Does anyone know what this could be and a way to treat it?
Thanks!

perhaps mud fever? or just REALLY dry skin? to be honest, i’m not sure, but in treating it, use a disinfectant wash such as hibiscrub or something similar, dry it off and then use dermagel, or again, anything you have that similar (its a healing disinfectant gel) or dermoline perhaps.
the main thing is to make sure its clean and kill whatever is causing it, and then use a protective cream or gel over it.
if nothing works, i would consult your vet

You can use this on pretty much anything. Open Cuts, Hooves, and more.
This is great for fungus and dry skin and hair growth it really works!
Oh you can use it for mane and tail growth and detangler!!
Hope this Helps! ;))
If this doesn’t work, you need to have your vet find the diagnosis. But you can try this first. It is safe, no matter what the condition is, and the ointment is the best I’ve ever used for skin lesions.
Buy a bottle of sterile saline at your drugstore and thoroughly soak the scabs, remove them, and cleanse the areas with it. Dry the sores using cotton pads.
Then buy an ointment called EMT, available online or at tractor/farm supply stores. Be sure you get the one for horses. Apply the ointment. It is a very sticky collagen gel. Collagen is a protein that is found in all connective tissues and needed for healing. This ointment also inhibits microbial growth, and reduces pain and itching. If you don’t see improvement in a day or two at most, then you need the vet since you may have a bacterial infection in the deeper layers of skin that require systemic antibiotic treatment. galloppal
