Can a liver problem cause skin to darken?

I was told that a family memeber is having some stomach pressure/pain and that his feet has gotten blackish in color and that this discoloration has now gone half way up his calfs. He was told that the doctors have seen something on his liver. He will be having further test. Can a liver problem cause this? Or does this sound more like a cerculation or blood clot problem?
