Westie Skin Problems?
Abbi asked:
I have a three year old westie, she is a very healthy dog, but is showing signs of skin problems, she keeps scratching almost constantly and biting her paws mostly trying to scratch her back with her nails, the other day she was biting her paws and they started to bleed. i know westies usually get skin conditions, just wondering how i could make it better for her?? any ideas?

Change to a food that does not have wheat, corn, or soy.
Stop vaccinations, they have been know to cause skin problems.
You can read about both online. A Great Dane Lady
I groom a Westie with similar problems. He is on a beef and corn-free diet. He eats only lamb and rice food. His vet has said it is a beef and corn allergy, some dogs also develop a wheat allergy. Your vet could perform a simple test to find out if this is your problem. They can also prescribe an allergy shampoo that you or your groomer can use. Siouxie
Give her daily neem oil this will boost her immune system and promote healthy coat and skin, bones and teeth, also protect her from worms, mites, fleas and ticks, so you don’t then need to give chemical insecticides or worming tablets which scour their stomachs.
Could be a food allergy often cereals in kibble, could be mites, could be genetic issues. Maxi
she has lack of oils. try to feed her boiled chicken mixed with human fruit muesli ( pick out nuts and raisins) this food will give her all vitamins, energy and VERY tasty. it wouldn’t hurt and your dog will have a full belly for long. you will see her skin will improve. you can mix finely cut raw or cooked carrots or other vegetables in it. you can mix it all ready for 2-3 days and store in the fridge.
a lot of skin problems is from the dog food. its dry and they put animal hair, bones, ears, tails in it. any one’s skin would scratch. brrr.
hope your doggy feels better.
oh, if you are lazy to mix chicken with muesli, you can buy on a market or at the butchers a bag of bones ( they have small bones) it costs 25 pence for 2 kg. you can freeze them and boil a couple every week ( boil for 2 hours). your dog will not believe it’s luck. it will clean her teeth, sharpen them, and give her all needed oils to improve the skin.
try before you go to vet and buy expensive chemicals which don’t work because they don’t address the actual problem. A
Needs 1/4tsp per day of cold pressed wheatgerm oil on her food for about 3 weeks (it is very rich in Vitmain E which is vital for good coat condition.) Swap her diet gradually to hypoallergenic lamb & rice kibble or something similar. John
