skin problems
•♥Rat a holic♥• asked:

My dumbo rat, Bonnie, gets sores and scabs and is always scratching herself. So I found online what to do, and one suggestion is to change their bedding. What’s a good bedding to change to that doesn’t normally give off allergic reactions? I currently use “Carefresh Colors”, I think it’s called. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!!
Tori- does Carefresh give off dust which can cause allergic reaction? is wood shavings okay?

Carefresh is the best for a pet rat. I use recycled newpaper, but that’s just me. Just make sure the bedding is soft and not rough because that make hurt their little feet.
And no pine or cedar! deadly to a rat.

try using towels and cloths to line the cage. it’ll save you money in the long run since you just have to wash and reuse :)

I think color carwe or whatever works, also, try something really soft, not woodchips

i had a guinea pig with skin problems. my vet told me to use eith aspen shavings/care frsh or shred newpaper or use cloths and towels.
care fresh does not give off any bad dust. it is recycled news paper i believe.i just didnt use it because it is ten dollars for a smallish bag and i change all my cages twice a week. that was getting costy.
she said those are the three best things for her.
i used news paper shreddings.and it worked fine. and she had bad skin problems that she last almost all her fur at ounce. but she is fine now.

What are you feeding her? A very common cause of scabs is too much protein in the diet. Remove all seeds from your rat’s food and her scabs should subside within a couple weeks.

Carefresh bedding should be fine, nice and soft for her. But i use shredded paper. It’s free (just had to buy the paper shredder) and has never given any of my rats problems, even my rat that gets scabs (well.. got scabs. She’s better now). Some people will argue that certain inks are poisonous to rats and that shredded paper should not be used because of this. That’s true, but as long as your rat is not eating the paper with said ink on it, it will be fine. My rats carry pieces of paper with ink on it in their mouths to build a nest and they are perfectly fine. Been using shredded paper for years and never had problems. Good luck!
